Trade Science Inc.

See the discussion on Beall's list. Can any journal that spams for editors of between 10 and 18 journals at once, as Trade Science has done in 2013 and 2016 (and probably other years), be credible? The website (1/29/17) observes that the journals "The high-indexed has contributed significantly" to the "wide spectrum of audience."

It lists two addresses (with a single telephone number): 57 Ullswater Avenue, West End Southampton, Hampshire UK S018 3QS, and 6th Floor, Building No.6, Divyasree Orion, Raidurgam village, Serilingampally Mandal, Hyderabad-500081, Phone: 040-33432400/2421

Time Journals

Eight subject-area journals were listed as of January 2016 and January 2017, with no address for the publisher. From the website (1/29/17):
⊡ "It arises from a reaction to the severe restriction of knowledge distribution imposed by subscription publishing models ... ."
⊡ "at the forefront of building the ultimate open journals platform."
⊡ "rapid publication (monthly) of manuscripts in virtually all fields of human endeavor."
⊡ "Customer-focused passion to win"
In a banner labelled "testimonials," the website reports that "Dr. Lu Qi has become the Founding Editor in Chief of Food & Nutrition: Current Research." It identifies Dr. Qi as "Adjunct Professor, Peking University, Beijing; Associate Professor of Medicine Harvard Medical School (HMS); Boston, MA, USA." The notorious Omics International lists Dr. Qi as a member of the editorial board of its Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences, and he was listed as a speaker for Omics' 4th International Conference and Exhibition on Nutrition, Chicago, 2015.
Time Journal of Biological Sciences and Technology
In January 2016, the Time Journal of Biological Sciences supposedly was "Monthly published," yet its archive showed only three issues every year, often consisting of a single article (with the same article sometimes appearing in more than one issue). In January 2017, the most recent issue available was for January 2016. It consists of a single article, on "Effect of cooking on the antinutrient composition of dikanut," which really appears in Vol. 1(3) pp.17 -20, October 2013.

Science Publishing Group (SciencePG)

SciencePG is one of the most brazen predatory publishers. Its website (5/13/17) advertises "200+ Journals, 10,000+ Papers, 50,000+ Registered Authors, 2,000,000+ Hits Per Month". It works "in media partnership" with the equally outrageous OMICS International. Here is a sampling of its journals:
  • The American Journal of Modern Physics has no editor listed, and the four-member editorial board of this "American Journal" hail from the Sudan, India, Russia, and the Ukraine. The published titles include "Modification of Einstein's E= mc2 to E =1/22 mc2/".
  • The American Journal of Physics and Applications has no editor either. The thirteen-member editorial board (5/13/17) of this "American Journal" includes no Americans. (Well, there is a South American in the Department of Basic Sciences, Maritime University of the Caribbean, Catia la Mar, Venezuela.) It published an article by Abdalla A. Jaber, of Tirana, Albania, on "Jaber's law," which "gives a new understanding of gravity and compares between stars and ball of lightning, and solves ambiguous matters in our understanding of stars, planets and moons behavior" and "explained the relation between gravity and temperature of objects, tying his theories with experimental discovery of repulsion between gravity and heat."
  • The American Journal of Applied Mathematics has no American editorial board members or reviewers and sports articles such as "Mathematical Proof of the Law of Karma."
  • The American Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering has no editor. The two members (5/13/17) of this "American Journal" are in Saudi Arabia and India. Publications include "Use of Energy Healing Medicine Against Escherichia coli for Antimicrobial Susceptibility, Biochemical Reaction and Biotyping" by Mahendra Kuma Travedi, Dahryn Trivedi, and three other colleagues at Travedi Global Inc. (Henderson, Nevada), and Trivedi Science Research Laboratory Pvt. Ltd. (Bhopal, India). The article reports that "Overall, data suggested that Mr. Trivedi’s biofield energy treatment can be applied to alter the antimicrobial sensitivity, biochemical reactions and biotype number of E. coli."
  • The American Journal of Pulmonary and Respiratory Medicine has no editor, but it does have two names with U.S. affiliations on its editorial board (5/13/17):  Dr. Duo Zhang, Pulmonary Center, Boston Unviersity School of Medicine, Boston, MA, and "Setu Patolia, School of Medicine, Saint Louis University, Saint louis, Missouri." No Duo Zhang is listed on the faculty of the BU Pulmonary Center, but he is with another flaky journal that identifies him as "a postdoc fellow at Boston University School of Medicine." That group, by the way, is Research and Reviews -- International Journals. It is "[c]ertified by American Montessori Council" and has "developed a unique education system that is a blend of our Ancient Vedic Educations with the practice equipment of Montessori system."
  • The European Journal of Biophysics has no one from Europe on the editorial board, but its board members and four peer reviewers supposedly include Khyati Dave, Department of Biodesign, Stanford University, and Peng Zou, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University.
SciencePG's home page (5/13/17) is entitled "Become Editor-in-Chief." Inasmuch as "Professor title or above will be preferred," you might well meet this publisher's high standards. The benefits are
Publish two papers for free per year.
20% discount for paper publishing.

The website boasts "700+ leading-edge peer reviewed, Open Access Journals that operates with the help of 50,000+ Editorial Board Members and esteemed reviewers and 1000+ Scientific associations." If that is not enough, would you believe "more than 15 million readers" study these journals? It might take that many to decipher some of the articles. For example, the webpage of the Journal of Scientific and Industrial Metrology includes the "relevant topic" of electricity and magnetism, which is defined -- mind-numbingly -- as follows:
This article presents key ideas of power and attraction important to anaesthesia. Straightforward analogies are utilized to clarify current power and the activity of electronic parts in like manner utilization. The idea of electric and attractive fields is presented with samples of their handy application.
Lovotics
The description of this journal is a tour de force of verbiage:
Lovotics is an open access, peer reviewed which publishes original research papers on new ideas and concepts, new discoveries and improvements, as well as novel and innovative applications. It aims to cover a broad spectrum of topics related to the latest technologies. It should be considered as multidisciplinary research field which utilizing the essential concepts from social and computer science, artificial intelligence and engineering, robotics, philosophy etc. It defines the research of relationship between human and robot and this relationship offer new possibilities for exploring the bidirectional human to robot love.
Intellectual Property Rights: Open Access (IPR)
This journal's website maintains that "Intellectual Property Rights is a controversial term ... . The journal includes a wide range of fields in its discipline to create a platform for the authors to make their contribution towards the journal and the editorial office promises a peer review process for the submitted manuscripts for the quality of publishing." A "related journal," it seems, is Intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Net Journals

Net Journals' website announces (4/25/17) that it "is committed to making valid contributions ... by providing world class information ,,, ." I guess that is better than making invalid contributions of world class information. Editors from US institutions as of January 2016 were Abdul Sami (Eye World, NY) and Xia Xuefeng (assistant professor of genomic medicine at the Houston Methodist Hospital Research Institute, also on the editorial board of the Jacobs Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics).

The About MRJMSS page explains that
Merit Research Journals of Medicine and Medical Sciences ... was sprung into actions for two reasons: To publish excellent and unprecedented researches that are in line with the interest of our journals. Secondly, to create avenue for exploration, ravaging and manifestation of the world of knowledge, and to disseminate the articles freely for teaching and reference purposes, especially for researchers and teachers in developing nations.
It is the policy ... not to request for grants for its operations ... . Rather we have chosen the model of self sustenance through collecting processing fee for articles published. ... Mehta Press

In 2013, Beall's list warned that
Mehta Press has been around since early 2010, but it has recently revamped its website and now boasts an amazing number of journals. I count 192 journals in the Mehta Press portfolio, but most of them are mere templates, lacking content and editorial boards. Because the publisher recently launched a bunch of new journals, it is spamming for manuscripts and editorial board members.
As of 11/29/16, Mehta Press's website did not even supply a list of journals -- just a drop-down menu with eight journals listed and a picture of some others. It has a prominent "Editors Invited" button on every journal page I found, suggesting that not much has changed. I clicked on the first journal, Current Analytical Sciences. The editorial board was blank. There was no table of contents. Perhaps that is why the email to me "Invites Curriculum Vitae of efficient Scientists for Editor Post in newly launched chemistry journals."
Email
  • 10/29/16: Manuscripts Invited. The Current Chemical Research is devoted to the rapid publication of fundamental research papers ... . All contributions shall be rigorously refereed and selecting on the basis of quality and originality ... . Maximum review time 15 days.
  • 2/22/17: Mehta Press Invites Curriculum Vitae of efficient Scientists for Editor Post in newly launched social sciences and humanities journals. Applications are invited for a Editor for following journals ... Anthropology International, Current Political Science, Current Updates in Advanced Communication & Media, Current Updates in Archaeology, Journal of Decision Sciences, Philosophy International, Psychology International, Sociology International. ... Immediate or very fast publication on acceptance.

  • 6/13/16: Dr. Kaye DH, I hope this email finds you well. My colleague Reni asked if I could get in touch with you about your paper titled The good, the bad, the ugly: the NAS report on strengthening forensic science in America.. Firstly thank you for taking the time to publish this, it was an interesting read. I am hoping to have the opportunity to discuss having a short followup or perhaps a review article published in one of the next issues of our journal. I think our readers could be interested in a paper with information from any continued research or new data since this was published. It would not have to be a long article, but if you don't have time for this perhaps you could also reach out to the co-authors or one of your students to collaborate. ... If you have any questions about whether or not a certain subject fits the scope of the Medical Research Archives I can put you in contact with Dr. Steven Lindheim from our editorial board. Could you please let me know your thoughts on this? Sincerely, Dr. Kateryna Bielka, M. D., Medical Research Archives, www.journals.ke-i.org/mra
  • 12/31/16: Dear Dr. Dr. Kaye DH, I hope you are enjoying the holidays. We were in contact a few months ago about your paper entitled "The good, the bad, the ugly: the NAS report on strengthening forensic science in America.". I wanted to check-in with you again about the possibility of publishing a followup/update to this paper in one of the next issues of the Medical Research Archives. I still think that such an article could be of much interest to our readers and am hoping that you are in a better position to write something now that the new year is starting. The length of the article and timing of submission are flexible. If there is any way I can assist in making this happen please do not hesitate to ask. Would you be available to proceed with this in the next 2-3 months? Sincerely, Dr. Kateryna Bielka, M. D., Senior Editor, Medical Research Archives, www.journals.ke-i.org/mra

Juniper Publishers and the Journal of Forensic Science & Criminal Investigation

Juniper Publishers are "honorably accepting E-books" and "delightfully launching the Audio Articles." Google Maps indicates that the address as of 10/10/16 is an apartment house in Thousand Oaks, California. This is a change from the initial addresses in 2015. Those were a mail forwarding front and an apartment house in Dubai, which led Beall to suspect that "thirty-six science journals are being published by one man out of a flat in Dubai.

The website displays unbounded ambition: "Juniper publishers have been established with the aim of spreading quality scientific information to the research community throughout the universe. We ... strive to offer the best in class ... thus matching up with the rapidity of the twenty-first century." All this for only $1049 for a research article from a "high income country."

From the guidelines for authors: "Juniper reviewers are requested to provide authentic, positive review comments and critics for the respective manuscript." Also, "One can intimate us your pinion of accepting or declining the invitation. If you are not able to accept the invitation you can suggest any of your colleagues, so that respective editor may invite that person to review and you may not transfer your invitation."

Beall's List of Predatory Publishers Wiped Clean

The list of allegedly predatory publishers exploiting the opportunities for open access publishing previously maintained at https://scholarlyoa.com, a.k.a. Beall's list, is no more. The blog is devoid of content. Clicking on the "list of publishers" produces the remark, "This service is no longer available." The reasons for the abrupt erasure are not publicly known.
“My blog is now unpublished,” said [Jeffrey] Beall, an academic librarian at the University of Colorado, Denver (UCD). He added that he couldn’t give reasons and declined to comment further.
Andrew Silver, Controversial Website that Lists ‘Predatory’ Publishers Shuts Down, Nature, Jan. 18, 2017. Science magazine calls it a mystery. Dalmeet Singh Chawla, Mystery As Controversial List of Predatory Publishers Disappears, Science, Jan. 17, 2017.

World Wide Law Review

The World Wide Law Review does not pretend to be an academic journal, but the publisher, Al Global Media, portrays itself as a "dedicated network of writers, researchers, designers and industry insiders." Furthermore, WWLR claims "contributions from some of the greatest legal minds of our day" and "razor sharp editorial [sic] designed to educate, inform and, ultimately, inspire readers, making it an invaluable resource for anyone involved with or interested in the global legal market."
Email
The following email purports to be a reminder, but it is the first communication from WWLR. It ends with a bizarre confidentiality notice and disclaimer. The confusion of first and last names is also reminiscent of Chinese spam, although Al Global's website sports a London address.

Annex Publishers

"Radical Novelty of Research" is Annex Publishers' slogan. Its websites have been delisted for spamming. Here are some items from the About Us page:
⊛ established with a motive to spread information among the scientific community ⊛ on the way to be the world leader in the provision of Open Access
⊛ permits us to succeed in various readers ⊛ provides them access to scientific publications on-line for free of cost.
⊛ we take away all barriers that ancient publication models to match with the pace of the twenty first century and therefore the large international analysis of research work
⊛ a hub for scientists and researchers who work hand in hand to bring a much better tomorrow for the human race
⊛ All manuscripts published by us are peer reviewed by an eminent editorial board of respective journal.
The eminent editorial board of "33 Open Access journals [and] 10 upcoming Journals" perform "21 Days rapid review process [with] Publishing within 24 hours after acceptance." Evidently, the board does not require revisions. Despite the 21-day and publication-without-revision promises, a page of FAQs advises authors that
[W]e intimate acceptance/acceptance with modification/rejection to the author's concerned on the same day of the receipt of the same. In case, you have not received any intimation from the journal, within two months of the receipt of your manuscript by the journal, you may raise the query about the status of your manuscript.
Forensic Science and Criminology (FSC)
The current (1/12/17) issue of the Journal of Forensic Science and Criminology (FSC) includes a Commentary and Review on Sacred Geometry, by Andres J Washington of "Fingerprint Geometric Analysis, Post Office Box 165, Bronx, NY," The abstract refers to a formula "designed to discover and analyze the compatibility/incompatibility of individuals and groups of individuals based on fingerprint classifications found in the Henry System of Fingerprint Classification and Filing." I could not find a formula on the page, but it must have something to do with the Great Pyramid Khufu. Mr. Washington explained that:
I have determined that the dimensions of the chart should reflect the perimeter of the base of the Great Pyramid Khufu at Giza Egypt  which  is  36524  pyramid  inches.  The  chart’s  dimensions  can  therefore  be  described  and  displayed  in  any  type  of  units  of  measurement so long as the perimeter equals 36524 units of measurement. Why is this necessary? Because the Ancient Egyptians show in this number three units of time, 365 for 365 days in a year, 52 for 52 weeks in a year and 24 for the 24 hours in a day. This is considered to be an impossible secret because it is said that today’s calendar was not yet developed at the time of the construction of  the  Great  Pyramid.  We  can  also  note  that  36,524.22  pyramid  inches  can  also  be  described  as  the  circumference  of  the  Great  Pyramid. In essence this equals the number of days in 100 years! In addition, a Tropical Year equals 365.24220 days. The length of each side of the base of the Great Pyramid is 365.2422 Royal Egyptian Cubits.
My thought is that this reflection is appropriate because the Great Pyramid’s construction was accurate to begin with.
The only name I recognized on the eminent editorial board that allegedly reviewed this contribution to modern forensic science is "Brent E. Turvey, Forensic Scientist & Criminologist, Forensic Solutions, LLC, Alaska, United States."

Scientific Research Association (SCIREA)

Not to be confused with the McGraw Hill company that publishes educational materials, Scientific Research Association (SCIREA) is a "global academic organization" lists the following "Open Science Policy Guide Lines to Submit the Manuscript:
The absolute prototype for manuscript is originality, high scientific quality and interest to a multidisciplinary audience.
Its website provides no address, no names, and no editors. There could be a connection to the SCIRP group, for the About SRA webpage states (9/26/16) that "SCIRP currently has 40 open access journals in the areas of science, technology and medicine." Another page (viewed 10/6/16) urges readers to "Subscribe for Interminable Submissions" by becoming individual, institutional or "cooperation" members. For an annual fee of $1200, the last group's "submitted manuscripts are eligible to avail the waiver." The membership page displays a connection to yet another dubious publisher, namely, the American Association for Science and Technology (AASCIT). Joining Scirea provides one with a discount "for the publication in AASCIT journals." Still Scirea "takes an opportunity to serve the scientific community, students and researchers with undefiled research works." Who could object to that?

The address provided is in Troy, Michigan, and corresponds to the Bytes & Mortar building on Crooks Road, which "offers private and virtual office space."
International Journal of Forensic Sciences
Its International Journal of Forensic Sciences includes an article from Michael Hall (Roger Williams University) on "Concept Mapping, Social Value, and Public Administration: Public Administration in the Mind of the Public it Serves." Here, one learns that "[t]he United States is based on and operates societally and governmentally as a social contract" and that "[m]essages to establish Public Administration’s social value can be crafted and distributed to the public to reawaken what Public Administration contributes to the social contract, its history, and its education contributions." It would take a good detective to find a significant connection to forensic science. The names of the journal's editors are not to be found in the pages of the journal or on the website. The publication fee for an article like this is $1949.

The 24 members of the board of editors include the following U.S. experts: Ahmet S Yayla, George Mason University; Ronn Johnson, Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System; Richard P Conti, Kean University; Katherine Carolyn Turner, San Diego State University; Julia M Mack, Gannon University; Claire L Glynn, University of New Haven; and Zhu Dan, Iowa State University.
Email
Medwin invited me (10/19/16 and again 10/21/16) to "act as editor" for its journal on vaccines in this email:

Maybe VVOA found its editors, for it then turned to more prosaic solicitations of manuscripts:

On 2/21/17, Monica sent the same email modified only to propose March 15, 2017, for "swift process of peer review and publication" in the vaccine journal. I asked if this journal would interested in "a paper reporting that I still got some colds after being vaccinated against the flu." Monica replied, "We are glad with your positive response towards our journal. As time being an important factor towards the issue release. We request you to submit your valuable manuscript as soon as possible." The full correspondence appears on a page of its own.

Elyns Publishing Group

Beall suggests that "the central idea of Elyns Publishing Group is to make an easy profit for its owner. This appears to be a one-man operation, and a Google search indicated that the man is Narasimharao Sadam. Only a few of the journals has any editorial board members, yet all are accepting manuscripts at this time." He reports that "The publisher is based in an apartment in a lower-middle-class neighborhood in Clifton, New Jersey." My own domain name search showed that it is registered to Narasimharao Sadam. 647 Cheryl Dr., Iseli NJ 08830, 732-781-5502, sadans188@gmal.com.

Elyns' website (5/2/17) describes Mr. Sadam's mission differently: "The central idea of ELYNS is to make the scholarly literature and scientific wisdom free and open to the scientific as well as the common world. ELYNS is committed to rationalize the disparities, neutralize the technical and economical constraints in the field of science, technology and medicine (STM) and development through its transparent peer review process supporting the Notion OPEN ACCESS Strongly."
Journal of Forensic Medicine and Legal Affairs
I examined one "short communication" entitled "Cheiloscopy -- An Overview of its Limitations and Future Perspectives." Authors can have such communications published for modest fees -- $150, $250, and $319 for residents of "low income," "middle income," and "high income" countries.  These authors should have gotten the low income price, being with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, NIMS Dental College, Jaipur, India.

The article begins "In forensic identification, the mouth allows for a myriad of possibilities." It asserts that "[t]he grooves present on the human lips are unique to each person and can be used to determine identity [1]. ... Lip print analysis is a process that provides both qualitative and quantitative results thus its application in the forensic field should be widely accepted by both law enforcement and the legal professionals [1]." Reference 1 is "Bajpai M, Mishra N, Yadav P, Kumar S. Efficacy of lip prints for determination of sex and inter observer variability. Euro J Exp Bio. 2011;1(4):81-86." Clicking on the link for the reference leads to a web page of another flaky publisher, Insight Medical Publishing, that reads "No Volumes and issues availiable..!"

The article itself contains grammatical errors (for example, "Bajpai M and associates discussed the inter observer variability which may influences the lip prints recording [1]"). Its best feature is its brevity. It ends with a one-sentence section on "Future Perspectives" that speaks to the quality of the contribution and the editing it received:
Although lip prints are unique to individual like fingerprints but further studies are needed to address the uniqueness of lip grooves also more human characteristics should be included like post surgical scars, crusting of lips, congenital lip pits, clefts etc [10].
Reference 10 is a survey of the curricula in forensic odontology at five universities.

Given this level of scholarship and expressive ability, it was not a surprise to discover that the journal has an editorial board that is all across the map. (The list includes the ubiquitous Henry C. Lee, whose name appears in connection with many a flaky journal and conference.)
