Insight Medical Publishing (iMedPub)

The website of the group's Journal of Medical Toxicology and Clinical Forensic Medicine says it all:
Forensic analysis studies the arranged information with respect to events of occurred crime. Forensic analysis is used to determine and understand the outlines of the total activities. The data from claim organizations or from their original files is stated to as arranged data. Formless data in comparison is taken from statement and applications or from mobile expedients.
Well, maybe not all. For some reason, the information "about Journal of Medical Toxicology and Clinical Forensic Medicine" has a definition of "jurisdiction." It explains that
Jurisdiction is the real authority to deduce and apply the act, or to rule and establish. ... The permissible term denotes only to the approved specialist ... . Jurisdiction pulls its body from public international law, constitutional law, , conflict of laws and the rules of the executive departments of government to assign funds to finest aid the requirements of its inherent society.

This Indian publisher “is organizing scholarly, online international journal which aims to Publishes peer reviewed original research result oriented Survey papers in the fields of Engineering, Science and Promote Innovative Technology.” Actually, there are ten "international journals" (12/28/16) of "recent trends," "emerging trends," "new trends," "research," "resedarch and development," and "scientific research" that aim to publish papers on any possible topic in science, mathematics, and engineering. A payment of 50 or 60 dollars buys a foreign author up to six pages of space and a certificate “in recognition of the publication of the paper.”

International Journal of Research and Development in Physics

Clicking on the "latest issue" of the International Journal of Research and Development in Physics (IJRDP) takes on to the archives. Every "volume" of the journal (one for 2014, 2015, and 2016) consists of a single issue. Every "issue" consists of a single article. Every paper in this international journal is domestic.

Internal Medicine Review

Beall is uncompromisingly negative, calling IMR "complete rubbish" from "a completely fake medical journal that falsely claims to be based in Washington, D.C." He maintains that this "hybrid" journal, as it calls itself, has "no subscribers — the entire operation is a scam [that may be] connected to the predatory publisher called KEI Journals. KEI claims it’s based in California, but they use a mail forwarding service there."

The Author Guide (viewed 10/17/16) states that "[t]he Internal Medicine Review grants authors rights to publish their work in any form for any scholarly purpose." That's great -- authors get to pay at least $1250 (unless they qualify for fee reductions on unspecified grounds) to give away their copyright to a "journal" that has no known circulation.

The emails purport to be "confidential and intended only for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed." In case you don't understand, they add that
This message contains confidential information and is intended only for the individual named. If you are not the named addressee you should not read, distribute or copy this e-mail. Please notify the sender immediately by e-mail or at 712 H Street #1018 Washington DC 20002 USA. If you have received this e-mail by mistake or wish to not recieve [sic] future emails from us, and delete this e-mail from your system. If you are not the intended recipient you are notified that disclosing, copying, distributing or taking any action in reliance on the contents of this information is strictly prohibited.
A two story building at 712 H St NE Washington DC 20002 is the location of Gold Spot, a payday loan and check cashing business. The website (viewed 1/27/17) uses the same fake address.

Editors

It is not apparent that there are any internists among the editors of Internal Medicine Review.
  • Senior Editor Lisseth Tovar's qualifications begin "Department of Anesthesiology staff." But where is this department? The websiteUpwork indicates that she is "a very creative person" who consults in London for $8.00 an hour
I am Lisseth Tovar, Medical Doctor, specialist in Anesthesiologist [sic] and a very creative person too, I am here to help you out specific areas like: Prezi presentations, powerpoint presentations, spanish transcriptions, translations (spanish – english), copy writing, data entry, academical writing (specifically about medicine), data-entry (typing speed 50 WPM). I have experience in translations related to medical journals. I have a proven ability to maintain the confidentiality to my employers. ... I am here to provide you the best solution. Moreover good and completing any Project in given time, meeting deadlines according to the instruction that is what I am. ...
  • Senior Editor Milena Mihaleva has the following qualifications (as listed in their entirety): "has served as a senior editor of the Internal Medicine Review since 2015."
  • The Editors include "Dr. Chadwick C. Prodromos, MD, The Johns Hopkins Medical School." This means that he received an MD degree from Johns Hopkins, not that he is on the faculty there. He is "a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing in the Chicago Metropolitan area."
  • The only other US editor is Dr. Timothy A. MirtzHe is Assistant Professor and Chair, Department of Secondary and Physical Education at Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach, Florida, and an "Adapted Physical Education Teacher" at a "Community, Educational and Vocational School."
  • Clicking on the names of a couple of other members of the editorial board reveals a dentist, a transplant surgeon, and a "a physical activity psychology scientist."
Sample Article

The current issue (Dec. 2016) begins with an article from a Tetsuya Isobe on "The Treatment To Make Home Life Peaceful." Dr., Mr., or Ms. Isobe (I can't say which because no information beyond the name is provided) concludes that "[t]he efficacy for mental symptom of PMS in shallow acupuncture using the specific pattern of needle placement was excellent, and this treatment made home life peaceful." The author's evidence for the benefit to homelife is that "When asked 'Is your home life peaceful?', 51.1% (23/45) [of the patients receiving acupuncture] answered 'Yes'." Dispensing with control groups or any other kind of comparisons certainly would make medical research easier.

  • Received 10/13/16: Dear Dr. Kaye Dh,
My colleague asked if I could get in touch with you about a paper you authored entitled "The good, the bad, the ugly: the NAS report on strengthening forensic science in America.". Firstly, thank you for taking the time to publish this, it was an interesting read. I am hoping to discuss with you having a short follow-up article or perhaps a review article published in one of the next issues of the Internal Medicine Review. ... It would not have to be a long article, but if you don't have time for this perhaps you could ask one of your co-authors or students to collaborate or contribute instead. If you have moved on from your previous research interests I am certainly interested in knowing more about your current projects; perhaps there is the potential for an article that would be published in our journal. If you have any questions about whether or not a certain subject fits our scope I can put you in contact with Dr. Chadwick Prodromos from our editorial board. Could you please let me know your thoughts on this?\

Herald Scholarly Open Access (HSOA)

Herald International Research Journals and Herald Scholarly Open Access are on Beall's list of "potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers." The publisher's website (12/26/16) is consistent with this assessment. Despite a Virginia address, it has this mission statement:
Herald Scholarly Open Access is a leading, internationally publishing house in the fields of Sciences. Our mission is to provide an access to knowledge globally. We provide high-quality articles to the scientific community and we strive for your research improvement and distinguishment throughout the world.
We all could use some distinguishment, but if that is not enough, HSOA's vision includes "A Platform to highlight quality exploration work to the biggest possible swarm over development points secured under the field of medicine." One of its medical journals had a dog on its board of editors
 .

The website of the Journal of Forensic, Legal & Investigative Sciences describes it as "a comprehensive, factual reference for anyone interested in learning about the topics in forensic sciences and legal medicine from a lay perspective."

How Scitech Central Fakes a U.S. Address

Ironically, Scitech Central posted a comment -- no, an advertisement -- on the blog Forensic Science, Statistics and the Law. That -- and the content of its website -- earns it a place here. Many of the brands with "Central" in the name are OMICS in disguise, but this one could be an independent voice in the cacophony of pseudo-journals.

It is hard to know, inasmuch as Scitech Central uses a virtual post office in the US rather than its true address. The putative address on its website (12/26/16) is "SciTech Central Inc., 340 S Lemon Ave # 2725, Walnut, CA 91789, United States." The 340 S. Lemon Ave. address is that of a company that sells an "Online Postal Mailbox" to "View Postal Mail Online. Anytime. Anywhere."

Get a real US address to receive postal mail. View your mail online without forwarding. Manage your postal mail no matter where you live.

Mail sent to the above address goes to Virtual Post Mail's building, and "your mail will not ship out of our facility, it'll simply be held at our warehouse until you pick it up."

There are lots of other telltale signs of flakiness. Among the frequently asked questions for SciTech Central is "How to find out if the particular journal exists?" (Answer: "use the search option.") Scitech Central is "inviting everyone to ... understand our motto." I am working on that, but I have not yet plumbed the depths of the slogan, "a quantum to research."

Also from its website (12/26/16):
  • established with a sole motive to disseminate knowledge, bring awareness and provide a good quality literature to the developing world
  • an amalgamation of great researchers and scholars who are constantly working for the betterment of human race with their dedication in research
  • To avail the scientists with all its support in the said cause, SciTech Central is accelerating ahead to become one of the leading service providers in Open Access Publications consisting a wide range of International Academic Journals.
  • We are inviting everyone to ... experience the rewards of advanced technologies without much pressure of cost on your side so that you’ll not regret in having to choose, or to be with us.
  • As our tagline says, “quantum to research” we are moving ahead with a great acceleration of 21st century and the vast global research scenario to ensure maximize distribution of enhanced developments to the world and the entire scientific community.
But it may difficult to "maximize distribution of enhanced developments" when eight journals have no named editors.
The other editors with "USA" in their affiliations, are
  • Stem Cell Research & Therapeutics: Prof. Paul J. Higgins, Albany Medical College, Albany, NY
  • Jpurnal of Cancer Science & Treatment: Prof. Min Li, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center
  • Food & Nutrition: Current Research: Prof. Dr. Lu Qi, Adjunct Professor, Peking University, Beijing; Associate Professor of Medicine Medicine [sic] Harvard Medical School (HMS); Boston, MA
  • Journal of Pharmaceutics and Drug Research: Prof. Ke-He Ruan, University of Texas Graduate School at Houston, Houston, TX
  • Journal of Immunology Research and Therapy: Prof. Xue-Zhong Yu, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
  • Journal of Chemical Science and Engineering: Dr. A. Heidari, California South University

Apparently, Scitech Central was feeling left out. It came to my attention by trying to post a slew of advertisements in the guise of comments on postings about other publishers. They begin "Great post. This article is really very interesting and effective.I think its must be helpful for us." Then the comments give links to their journals.

UPDATE: 12 December 2020

Zoominfo reports that Severino Nodar is "Professor, President and Chief Executive Officer at SciTech Central." It identifies him further as "Professor of Molecular Biology, AlbizĂş University." AlbizĂş's main campus is in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It has no biology department. The academic programs are limited to psychology, education, speech and language, criminal justice, and human services. No Severino and no Nodar is in the faculty directory for the campuses. Zoominfo also reports 78 employees, annual revenue of $15 million -- and headquarters at the mail drop in California.

A remarkable paper from one of Scitech Central's journals displays what I am tempted to call peerless peer-review.

SciTechnol (OMICS in disguise)

In May 2012, Beall reported that OMICS created this name for 53 instant journals and was "spamming tens of thousands of academics, hoping to recruit some of them for the new journals’ editorial boards." The domain scitechnol.com is registered to Srinu Babu G, OMICS International, 5716 Corsa Ave, Suite 110 Westlake, Los Angeles CA 91362-7354, +16.506189889, email@omicsgroup.net. You can obtain the same geographic address from InCorp Services, Inc., for $99 a year (if you pay for multiple years)..

The About Us webpage (11/27/17) advertises "global presence ... to take the high quality research work close to a wide range of ... communities." Too close for comfort perhaps. SciTechnol claims to have "104 Hybrid Access online Journals, ... 1500 Editorial team, 2 Million readers, ... More than 50,000 Facebook Likes."

Journal of Forensic Toxicology and Pharmacology (JFTP)

The first Scitechnol journal that spammed me (on 12/20, 21, 22, 26/16) was the Journal of Forensic Toxicology and Pharmacology (JFTP). It manages to combine "all areas related to Forensic Toxicology, Digital Forensics, Forensic Chemistry, Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacology on quarterly basis. ... Papers will be published approximately 15 days after acceptance." Apparently, "papers" covers a lot. "SciTechnol accepts various formats of literary works such as ... abstracts, addendums, announcements, ... annual meeting abstracts, conference proceedings, calendars, ... corrections, discussions, meeting-reports, news, obituaries, orations, product reviews, hypotheses and analyses."

The names and photos listed for JFTP editors from the US are James T Pokines, PhD, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, Boston University (who is "the Forensic Anthropologist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Boston"); Karl A Larsen, PhD, University of Illinois at Chicago; John Zheng Wang, PhD, California State University-Long Beach (a featured speaker in BIT Global's flaky conferences); Donald Siwek, PhD, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, Boston University; Fred Smith, PhD, Department of Forensic Science, University of New haven [sic]; Harvey J.M. Hou, Ph.D, Alabama State University; Lisa Reidy, PhD, Division of Clinical Pathology, University of Miami; Thomas A. Brettell, PhD, Cedar Crest College, USA; Elizabeth Laposata, Boston University; Marilyn T. Miller, Department of Forensic Science, Virginia Commonwealth University; George Thomas, Department of criminal justice & Forensic sciences, Albany state university; Jeff Hackett, United Chemical Technologies, USA ("Research interest: toxicologist").

If this journal has an editor-in-chief, it has not chosen to reveal his or her identity on the website.

Remedy Publications

Remedy Publications describes itself (12/22/16) as a "mega journal." Its journals bear names like "American Journal ___," "World Journal ___," "Global Journal ___," and "Clinics In ___." Harvard Medical School professor Shuji Ogina tweeted (3/11/16) "Remedy Publications LLC is a horrible publisher that keeps sending me countless spam emails. Please do not support this company." Beall writes that "Remedy Publications claims it’s based in California, but I think it is probably a new brand from the Hyderabad, India-based publisher OMICS International. They botched their California address on their website ... . ... Once again, UTSA’s George Perry is listed as one of the editors. He serves on more predatory editorial boards than anyone."

Clinics in Oncology
Not many bona fide medical journals call themselves "mega journals," but the website (7/2/16) reports: "Clinics in Oncology Journal is a peer reviewed open access mega journal aims to publish basic, translational and clinical original research articles from all areas of oncology, surgery, clinical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, oncology case reports and images." It promises "rigorous peer-review"--wait for it--"within 2–3 weeks of submission. The interval between acceptance and publication online is 8 days ... on a continuous publication model." The editor-in-chief is "Min Rex Cheung, MD, PhD," who "is a board certified radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of a variety of adult cancers with radiation therapy. He obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. from Columbia University School of Medicine in New York City."

Center for Promoting Ideas (CPI)

For suggestions that CPI is not legitimate, see
The last article (on the Times Higher Education site) reported that in 2012, the indexing service Scopus had rejected the CPI journals and would ask that it not use its name in marketing materials. CPI has not honored this request. (An email of 11/15/16, sent by a Micah Coleman (micahcoleman44@yahoo.com) but signed by "Dr. J. Sabrina Mims-Cox, The Chief Editor, International Journal of Humanities and Social Science (IJHSS)," states that "the journal is under the indexing process with ISI, ERIC, Econlit, Scopus and Journalseek.") The article also reports an editorial board populated by academics who never heard of the journal and unsuccessfully asked to have their names removed, as well publication fees going to an account in Bangladesh.

Google Maps finds nothing to report (11/26/16) at the address for the "Director (USA), Dr. John Simth Jr., 432 Claremont Avenue, New York, NY 10027." Three other "key people" are at this address. The other director is said to be one Nilofa Yasmin in Bangladesh. The About CPI page declares that CPI is "a virtual research organization ... working for creating and nurturing talents in USA and Bangladesh ... and has attained a significant place in the world for its praiseworthy activities."

The domain name of one the journals (AIJSS) was registered by Md. Mamin Ullah, of Western Education, 5/Ka, 2nd Floor, PC Culture, Ring Road Shamoli, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh, +88.01778964703, mamin_83@hotmail.com. He is the founding director of the "American Research Institute for Policy Development" -- another publisher of very flaky journals. The identity of whoever selected the CPI domain name (cpinet.org) is hidden. The organizational registrant is PrivacyDotLink Customer 2634320, PO Box 30485, Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, KY1-1202, KY.

International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The editorial board (as of 11/26/16) is said to include three US members: Dr. George Lehman, Professor of Business and Economics, Bluffton University, USA; Dr. J. Peter Pham, Assistant Professor of Justice Studies, Director, Nelson Institute for International and Public Affairs, James Madison University, USA; Thomas Traynor, PhD, Professor, Department of Economics, Wright State University, USA. The chief advisor is Jim Briden, PhD, Professor, School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford, UK.

The solicitation email of 1/17/16 indicates that Anson Braeden  (anson.aripd15@yahoo.com) is the sender, but a Google search turns up nothing for the name or address. The AIJSS website gives an address with no academic affiliation in Colfax, Louisiana, for the journal's editor-in-chief.

The US members of the editorial board are listed (5/29/16) as Patricia Westerman, Professor of Psychology, Bowie State University; Toni Muhammad, Department of Sociology, University of Louisiana, Lafayette; Linda Barton, Lead Professor of Marketing, College of Business Administration, Gainesville, GA; Jared Keengwe, Associate Professor, Department of Teaching and Learning, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks; Gary W. Canadian Center of Science and Education (CCSE)

The Canadian Center of Science and Education "publishes many open-access journals and ... is now threatening to sue [Jeffrey Beall] for alleged defamation and libel." 1/ Beall, an academic librarian, listed it among the swelling ranks of "potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers."

CCSE appears to be associated with ScholarTown and Sciedu Press.

Journal of Management and Sustainability
Less than a week after I posted a 38-year-old book review on the Social Science Research Network, a Maple Xiao pounced, sending an email for the Journal of Management and Sustainability. Apparently, "management and sustainability" embraces a wide swath of subjects. (The book review asked whether it was proper for a former prosecutor to disclose previously private information about the subjects of the criminal investigations, and it questioned the justifications given by former Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski for some of his decisions.)
Email
  • 12/23/15: I have the honor to read your paper "Book Review, The Right and the Power: The Prosecution of Watergate", and really appreciate your contributions in this area. As the editorial assistant of Journal of Management and Sustainability, I write to invite you to submit manuscripts to our journal.

Biomed Central

An early open-access journal publisher, Biomed Central has been said to offer a cornucopia of "low quality" journals. According to one report (BioMed Central Accepts and Quickly Publishes an Obvious Junk Paper), "Biomed Central has published an obviously bogus scholarly article that apparently uses the 'template-plagiarism' technique, crafting a new article from an earlier one, changing the data and some of the text." Despite what seems to be flagrant plagiarism, the Biomed Central article remains on the web as 7/1/16.

In 2015, BMC Medicine published an article on the spam "associated with the rise of predatory journals (journals exploiting gold open access, providing no or non-sensible peer review, undercutting standard article processing charges, while frequently publishing rubbish)." The article examined the number of invitations to submit articles received "received by one of the authors (DM) over a 1-year period." David Moher & Anubhav Srivastava, You Are Invited to Submit … , BMC Med. 2015, 13:180, doi.org/10.1186/s12916-015-0423-3.

UPDATE (4/17/19): In 2008, the major publisher, Springer, acquired BMC, and the latter now is part of the Springer Nature Group. Springer praises BMC as "[a] pioneer of open access publishing" with "an evolving portfolio of high quality peer-reviewed journals." BMC claims to have "the highest standards of peer review." Nevertheless, in 2015 and 2016, large numbers of papers were retracted from BMC journals for plagiarism and "peer review and author manipulation."

Bioaccent Group

The About Us page (12/21/16) includes "sentences" like this one: "'Quality is our first priority' hence Bio Accent open access publishers help the scientific community to publishquality articles related to latest developments happening in the areas of science, Technology and Medical." That is a mouthful from a publisher (on Beall's list) that is "one of the leading Open access publishing house based in Delware, USA." Judging from an email of 8/29/16, Bioaccent Group "invincibly believes" I am a urologist and "selective scientist" who has "enormously contributed." But, wait, a latter email reports that if I do not submit an article on pediatrics, that journal will be stalled. And the physics journal also can't complete its next issue without my "valuable manuscript." It's nice to be so important.

Bentham Science

Although the Bentham Science website promises "authentic peer review," Wikipedia (12/21/16) notes that
In 2009, the Bentham Open Science journal The Open Chemical Physics Journal published a study contending dust from the World Trade Center attacks contained "active nanothermite". Following publication, the journal's editor-in-chief Marie-Paule Pileni resigned stating, "They have printed the article without my authorization… I have written to Bentham, that I withdraw myself from all activities with them." ... In 2013, The Open Bioactive Compounds Journal was one of the journals that accepted an obviously bogus paper submitted as part of the Who's Afraid of Peer Review? sting. It has since been discontinued.
I received the following request to be a peer-reviewer of an article far outside my expertise:
From: Editorial Office [editorial@benthamscience-reviews.com]
Sent: Feb. 21, 2018, 12:50 PM
Dr. DH Kaye, Penn State Univ, Sch Law, University Pk PA 16803 USA.
In view of your expertise in the field, your name has been recommended as a potential reviewer for the manuscript entitled “Probabilistic Reasoning and Risk-Constrained Dynamic Spectrum Access” that has been submitted for publication in Recent Advances in Communications and Networking Technology. Please review the abstract if it comes in your field of expertise and provide us your willingness to review the complete manuscript. I hope that you will be able to help us. ... I would appreciate if you could kindly respond to this message at your earliest. Since we are endeavoring to provide an efficient review process for our authors, we would request that send your comments and recommendations back to us as soon as possible. Thank you for your consideration.

Demonstrating the journal's lack of knowledge about its referees, the same email, addressed to Dr. Kaye instead of Dr. DH Kaye, came to another address an hour earlier.

Current Drug Research Review asked me to be an executive guest editor. Again, no expertise. The email omits the identity and locale of the publisher, Bentham. A proxy hides the domain owner, but the email came from a server in Pakistan. As of 2019, the journal is indexed in Medline, which identifies it as located in the UAE.

An email from the Open Journal of Probability and Statistics (reproduced below) boasts of seven successful years of publication. No volume for 2015 is online. 2014 was a better year -- there was a grand total of one article.

A webpage (12/21/16) cites endorsements from six Nobel Laureates. Three are still alive. One, Ferid Murad, also is the president of allegedly "bogus" conferences connected to Bentham. For more critical comments, see
