OMICS Journal of Forensic Medicine

OMICS has long been criticized for aggressively and deceptively promoting conferences and journals of dubious quality. In 2012, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported that although OMICS began publishing in 2008, "only about 60 percent of [its 200] journals have actually published anything."  As of 2012, NIH informed OMICS that PubMed Central would not accept any OMICS Publishing Group journals because the "[National Library of Medicine's] selection group has raised serious concerns about the publishing practices of your organization." A letter demanded "that you cease and desist from employing our name or the name of any of our agencies institutes or employees on your website for other than true factual statements."

The website of its Journal of Forensic Medicine includes such morsels as "Forensic Medicine is a multidisciplinary subject ... used to for the scientific assessment of DNA, blood samples, and so on. Forensic plays an important role in criminal investigations and it is equally used in archeology, Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Geology and Victimology." All OMICS journals advertise a "21 day rapid review process."

Who edits the journal and what researchers will pay $519 to avail themselves of this "platform to the authors to publish their research outcome"? No editor-in-chief is listed. The US members of the editorial board are said to be
Bruce A. Jackson, Professor and Chair, Biotechnology Department, MassBay Community College, 50 Oakland Street, Wellesley Hills
John Zheng Wang, Professor of Forensic Science, School of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Emergency Management, California State University-Long Beach (a crime scene technician who later became an instructor at China Criminal Police University according to the pop-up biography; also a featured speaker at OMICS conferences)
Ronn Johnson, Associate Professor, University of San Diego (in the School of Leadership and Educational Sciences according to the pop-up biography)
Jon P Ver Halen, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Texas A&M School of Medicine
Alireza Heidari, Faculty of Chemistry, California South University (CSU), Irvine, California (a postdoc according to the pop-up biography)

International Organization of Scientific Research (IOSR) Publishing

The website (4/28/17) of the International  Organization of Scientific Research displays many danger signs. For example,
  • "IOSR Journals follow peer review process. It takes 7-10 days."
  • "[A]ll authors would be awarded hard copy of acceptance certificates after the publication of paper."
  • "Research Areas ... Lightning and Ear thing works ... ."
  • "In the present days International Organization of Scientific Research (IOSR) publishes research articles related to various streams of Technology and Engineering."
  • "IOSR Board Member[s]" are "formely" this and "formealy" that.
  • No address, no telephone number.
The domain iosrjournals is registered to Chetan Sharma, Shri Ram Colony, Devi Mandir road, Dasna, haziabad (201015), Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh 201015, India, +91.9313171903, chetan.journals@gmail.com. The email address appears in the whois records for the domains used by other journals such as the "American Journal of Engineering Research."

DEStech Publications

The website (4/25/17) reports that "DEStech Publications, Inc., founded in 2001 and located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (U.S.), is an independent academic STM publishing company that develops and publishes original professional books and university textbooks written and edited by scientific researchers." Sounds good, but the email I get is all for conferences in China, with admonitions like "academic moral is required" and promises of publication even if I do not attend the conference.

More unflattering information on DEStech was at Beall's website.

Xia & He Publishing and Medjaden in Texas?

The Xia & He Publishing website (4/24/17) "company information" page states that the company is a "publisher of topical English language journals on all aspects of biomedical research." It promises "peer review and education regarding the scientific process, achieved through workshops, lectures, and our editorial interactions with authors." The directors are Hua Xiang Xia and Hua He. Although "headquartered in Texas, USA," only one of the eight company "members" is in Texas. The other seven are in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, and China (Wuhan, Chongqing, and Beijing). Director Hua He also is an executive editor of an Omics journal.

That Xia & He would offer someone like me, with zero expertise in pharmacology, $200 for an article for the Journal of Exploratory Research in Pharmacology because of "your significant contributions to the field of pharmacology" (see below) is a bad sign.

So is the company's address -- 11415 Ashford Willow, Sugar Land, Texas, 77478, USA. The building at this address is a single family dwelling. A couple of real estate websites give a variety of names for the occupants (with a little overlap): Vinay S Kantak, Rekha S Puranik, Sudhir Puranik, B Salunkhe, and Amy Verga. Directors Xia and He use the same address for Medjaden, Inc., incorporated in Texas in 2015. This company may be the same as Medjaden Biosciences, Ltd, a Hong Kong company founded in 2005.

The Global Scientific Library (GSL) Journal of Forensic Research

"Global Science Library (GSL) is one of newly start-up publishers [that] aims at making access to knowledge FREE for ALL." Its website (4/23/17) sports the names of 34 journals. The one I heard from, the GSL Journal of Forensic Research, purports to have 19 editors but apparently needs more (see the email below). These editors include
⊖ Dr. Kristin Holland, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, United States
⊖ Dr. Heath Grant, John Jay College of Criminal justice, United States
⊖ Dr. Judge Mary A Celeste, National Judicial College, United States
The "Dr. Judge" is a retired Denver County judge who is a consultant "designated as an expert witness on marijuana and driving in a Court of Law" with one article in a peer reviewed journal listed on her C.V. The affiliation with the National Judicial College is "Adjunct Faculty."

"Newly start-up" seems to be a euphemism as well as a solecism. Apparently, there is no editor-in-chief, and the links for "current issue" and "archives" reveal nothing.

GSL gives its address as 1320 Willow Pass Road Suite 600, Concord, California. So do various lawyers and other businesses. The property is advertised as a place to "[b]uild a local business presence with professional, tech-powered workspace" where "You can meet up with clients in our convenient, fully equipped meeting rooms" and "Work confidently in private or shared office space."

Science Domain International

I would guess that Science Domain International is another Indian venture. If there is a main address on the website, it is well hidden. Emails for the Journal of Scientific Research and Reports give three addresses -- London, Delhi, and New Castle (in Delaware). But SDI does not seem to have an office in Delaware. The New Castle address actually is for Agents and Corporation, Inc., a "remote agent" firm that provides cheap incorporations in Delaware.Wherever it may be located, however, SDI has a "thirst for excellence" and "top innovation."

SDI also may be operating as International Knowledge (IK) Press (discussed here) and ResearchPromotion.com. Scientific Spam reported that
Something calling itself “ScienceDomain International Ltd”, apparently of Third Floor, 207 Regent Street, London, W1B 3HH, continues to turn up in spamtraps. They have existed as an UK company twice, but both registrations have been dissolved (Reg. No 07794635 – Dissolved on 14 January 2014; Reg. No 08988029 – Dissolved on 24 November 2015). Nonetheless, they process personal data without having ever registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office, which in itself is a criminal act in the United Kingdom.

The Manuscripts of MedCrave

The MedCrave Publishing Group's About Us page contains the vacuous hyperbole typical of journals that are best avoided. Here we learn that MedCrave is
dedicated to make original valuable scientific content available freely to the global population. ... amazed by science and its wonderful forms and we now bring this beauty to you too. ... a collection of ... works of pure significance. ... relevant to science ... open for all interested members around the globe ... .
Not only that,but
The manuscripts of MedCrave have overcome all the barriers that lay in the way of knowledge.
With the insight of a Chinese fortune cookie, MedCrave "considers the will to tear up your ignorance as the best price you could pay" and gushes that "there is no best price for knowledge except the will to learn." As to what one might learn, well, it could be anything "from the traditional divisions to contemporary works."

It could even be a faux study of "uromycitisis poisoning" -- a disease created for an episode of Seinfeld -- submitted by a nonexistent "Arthur Vandelay Urological Research Institute" to MedCrave's Urology & Nephrology Open Access Journal. It took three days for the journal to complete its favorable peer review of an article with a references to nonexistent sources such as a putative New York Times report that "New Public Urination Passes Approved for Uromycitisis Sufferers." The author of the uromycitis article describes the incident in The Scientist (in a report by the article's author).

Medcrave considers itself "one of the finest Online Publishing Groups" and has a scrolling banner of "NIH funded and indexed articles." I clicked on three of them. None were published by MedCrave.
