American Journal of Engineering Research (AJER)

I have not been able to determine the publisher of the American Journal of Engineering Research (AJER). A reputable journal would have the publisher's name and address on its website. This journal's email to me came from an account on a South Korean web portal and had no signature line or other identification of the individual who wrote it. The domain name AJER.org is registered to Chetan Sharma, Publishing, Shri Ram Colony, Devi Mandir road, Dasna, Ghaziabad (201015), Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh 201015, India, +91.9313171903, chetan.journals@gmail.com. The name or email address is associated with various other flaky journals or publishers. The address on AJER's website belongs to National State Research, a private company in Connecticut. Its Vice President of R & D, Moinuddin Sarker, is the managing editor of the journal. Dr. Sarker has four publications in OMICS journals.

Other red flags are evident. First, aside from Moinuddin Sarker, the editorial board of this "American Journal of Engineering" is devoid of editors from the United States. (Good journals need not have US editors, but one has to wonder about the honesty of an "American journal" that has such tenuous connections with America.)

Second, it is not clear how many of the editors are engineers. One is a postdoc (polymer science) at Shah abdul Latif University in Pakistan. Others specialize in such subjects as animal breeding, genitourinary tumors, health and epidemiology, hypoxia, and "Logic, Philosophy of Maths and African Science."

Third, the journal touts its inclusion in the American National Engineering Database (and in no other indexing service). ANED has been described as a "fake database by fake publisher" in India.

Fourth, the journal promises peer review within a week. Competent peer review within a week is not routinely possible.

Finally, AJER insists that it is an "official international journal," whatever that means.

Invention Journals are "Open Aaccess"

Five journals, all ending with the word "Invention" in their name, are listed on the website inventionjournals.org (10/10/2018). They are "Open Aaccess To All Researchers" with "Online As Well As Print Version Both" and "Doulble Blind Peer Review." (Evidently, line editing remains a challenge to the editors.)

These journals have posted a copyright assignment form that is incoherent. It states that the author "understand[s] that the Editor-in-Chief IJESI may transfer the Copyright to a publisher at his discretion" yet asserts that "[t]he author(s) reserve(s) all proprietary rights ... ."

The spam and the web sites provide no address or telephone numbers, but India is the probable location. The registrant information on the domain ijesi.org is limited to the location of Uttar Pradesh. The registrar is Net 4 India, Ltd. The "Editorials Board Members" of the International Journal of Engineering and Science Invention, which spammed me, include "Dr. Salawu .O.W", an "Inorganic Chemist, Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi , Benue State Nigeria" with three years of "Experience."

Gece Academy: Pay to Publish Your Dissertation or Thesis

It is easy to have a dissertation published. In addition to outfits that help with the construction of any e-book from any paying author who wants to self-publish, there is ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, which boasts "[t]he largest collection of electronic theses and dissertations available worldwide ... 4 million works from more than 3,000 universities, [with] more than 130,000 works [added] annually" (10/5/18). (On the perils of publishing with ProQuest, see Kathryn Hume's remarks in https://theprofessorisin.com/2011/08/24/the-perils-of-publishing-your-dissertation-online/.)

Another option for avoiding the screening process or criteria of traditional, relatively selective academic publishing houses is to turn to publishers who are less picky or who use different criteria. Obviously, these publications will carry little brand-name prestige, and expecting high quality line and copy editing could well be unrealistic. But you have to pay for them anyway with Gece Academy.

Gece's email suffers from the absence of such editing, and its Park Avenue address apparently comes from Regus, a virtual office supplier used by many of the publishers whose emails appear in this blog. Gece Publishing House also publishes papers from conferences -- with payment up front from the authors.

Fitness World Magazine wants "your outstanding research in medical field"

Perhaps the email below does not qualify for inclusion in the Flaky Academic Journals blog. Who would mistake "Fitness World Magazine" for an academic journal? Nevertheless, it seems to reaching out (from an email address in India) and using a street address in California (that Google Maps does not recognize) to attract contributions from "researchers ... in the medical field."

IJCER Publications, "The Imminent and Sovereign Online Engineering Information Service"

A webpage called "The Foundation" on icjeronline.com indicates that the publisher's only journal to date fills a much-needed gap in the literature. It begins:
The IJCER Publications is established in the year of September-2011 with people from various avenues of engineering profession, who have come together in a single platform [sounds painful] to redefine the structure of engineering profession in the country, where it is seen only as an industry oriented profession.
We are pleased to introduce ourselves as the novel, imminent and sovereign online engineering information services in the world. The foundation aims to support every effort to “empower technical education and research/Young research engineering scholors”. With a first of its kind website in the country [would that this were so], it strive to improve the knowledge of students and professionals in the various fields of engineering by providing valuable resources in the form of ebooks, articles etc. It is a platform for all students, budding engineers to develop their career further. Mainly focusing on Students/ Young research engineering Scholors, the prime objective of www.ijceronline.com is to bridge the gap between Industry and Institute by promoting mutual understanding and relationship between Professionals & Students/Research Scholors. ICJER Publication. ...
There must be a great in-house staff of reviewers, because the "Peer Review Time [is] within One week." Of course, there is a catch: "If article is accepted than authors require to deposit following manuscript handling charges by online transfer or by going bank."

AND Media, a "Google Partner Network"

Today's email is not from a journal publisher -- flaky, predatory, or otherwise -- at least, not one that I can locate. It purports to be from Google News, Google News (Partnered Company), and AND Media Ltd ( Google Partner Network). The message has the deceptive title "You are Featured in Google News" -- no such luck. The claims are rather silly -- "you can even apply for grants from the government or university by publishing your work in Google News"!

The domain name oasispub.co.in suggests an Indian origin. ICANN does not show registration data, but a whois search on domaintools.com shows registration to "Student" in India in June 2018. The website oasispub.co.in is a blog (with no content) called "Oasis Cart – One shopping destination." Neither Mapquest nor Google Maps recognizes the email's street address in Massachusetts.

Under these circumstances, it is difficult to imagine why anyone would send "your opinion article" or "your research work" to this "Google Partner Network." I submitted an inquiry to Google News and will supplement this posting if I learn more.

UPDATE (August 23, 2018): Apparently Google could not care less who advertises itself as a "Partnered Company." So far, I have received no reply to my inquiry there. In response to a second spam on Aug. 19, I asked Jennifer Ballard, "Before I send an article, could you provide more information about AND Media Ltd – who is on the editorial board, whether you pay for articles, what subjects are of interest, etc.?" No reply so far.

Iris Publishers, "your one-stop-place for latest scientific!"

The About Us webpage of Iris Publishers (7/12/18) has such ringing phrases as "your one-stop-place for latest scientific!" "aiding the growth of learners ... for the prosperity of science." They want "to exploit the scientific information"and "to unfold the quality research globally." To exploit and unfold, IRIS uses a "potential Editorial team" and a "highly qualified and expert Editorial committee [that] is indulged in scrutinizing articles with stringent peer review process ensuring that it follows our policies." Who could ask for anything more?

Iris has pictures of 35 journals on its website -- 36 you count the World Journal of Yoga and Natural Therapy twice -- because it "is an ambidextrous journal."

The domain name irispublishers.org is registered to New Dream Network, LLC dba DreamHost Web Hosting. The telephone number on the contact page, 914-407-6109, also is used by Lupine Publishers, which is "focused on ... Remedial missions in relation with Technical Knowledge." Virtual office supplier, Regus, could be the source of the address of the office building in San Francisco. Clearly, there is reason to wonder where Iris is actually located. The spam inviting me "to join your hands with us in this instigate" suggests that the handshake would be quite a stretch.

UPDATE: Two comments of July 13, 2018, provide more information. One from "Smut Clyde" reveals that the common telephone number for Lupine and Iris (not to mention the flowery association) is no accident. He (or she) found that
Iris Publishers LLC is a Colorado Domestic Limited-Liability Company filed on May 18, 2018 .... The company's principal address is 7865 S Grand Baker St., Aurora, CO 80016. That Aurora street address is also the home of Lupine Publisher, Crimson Publisher, "Biomedical Research Ltd", and Sudheer Kaku (the scammer who registered the corresponding domains).
The address on the spam from the Global Journal of Forensic Science & Medicine is that of an office building with space rented by Regus. This company provides a "Virtual Office, The right image for your business, with a prestigious address and a range of supporting services."

The International Conference on Newfangled Methods of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (ICNMPCM) won't meet anywhere, but its "delegates" may have their papers published in two flaky journals..It is not unusual for single journals to have symposia on given topics, or for real conferences to have a journal or two consider the papers for publication as a group, but I have never before encountered a so-called conference that exists solely to funnel papers to questionable journals.

The newfangled conference website (http://www.icnmpcm.org.in/index.html) provides the following description (as of 6/27/18):
ICNMPCM welcomes author to present research work through online, it provide common platform for researches, professors and industry professionals. This conference is an ideal platform for keeping up advances to a consistently morphing fields. It is most innovative conference which has been leading and experts from around the global will be presenting the emerging thoughts through papers.

All registered papers will be submitted to International Journal of Mechanical and Production Engineering Research and Development (IJMPERD)for possible publication after the internal scientific check. ...
The About Us page adds that "Our main arrow is to hit the world with new techniques. The Contact page provides no address. Aside from an HTML form, it gives email URLs for Prof.srajendra@gmail.com and mallaharsha84@gmail.com as well a Indian mobile telephone number. The domain name icnmpcm.org.in is registered by Endurance Domains Technology LLP for "Confer Professional Group of Conferences, Andhra Pradesh, India."

the "Guest Editors" are all Indian and Malaysian, except for "Dr. Sattar B. Sadkhan, Editor in Chief of IJACT in South Korea, Chair of IEEE ComSoc Iraq Chapter, Chairman of URSI Iraq Committee, Honorable Research Director of IRAQ for (BRCORP), Editor in Chief of many International scientific Journals."

The International Journal of Engineering & Technology (UAE) is a product of the United Arab Emirates' Science Publishing Corporation, whose journals include "International Journal of Scientific World." It welcomes "[e]xtensions of previously published high-quality articles ... if they have been recommended by the conference organizing committee." It lists Google Scholar among its "partners."

The other journal that this virtual conference will feed is published by nothing less than Transstellar Journal Publications and Research Consultancy Private Limited. The domain name tjprc.org is registered to TJPRC Journals, Tamil Nadu, India. Transstellar claims to have agents or offices in "Texas - USA, California - USA, London - UK, Ontario - Canada, Mesaieed - Qatar, Singapore and Chennai - India. It also has 14 journal editorial offices (research partners) around the world ... ." Zillow describes the Houston location (13218 Golden Field Dr) as "a single family home that contains 2,398 sq ft and was built in 1997. It contains 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms." Subject: Deadly statistics quantifying an unacceptable risk in capital punishment - Research Features
Please excuse the direct nature of this contact. I would like to speak with you regarding your work with the Deadly statistics quantifying an unacceptable risk in capital punishment study. Research Features are working in collaboration with research teams around the world assisting with their Public Outreach activity, through means of a professionally produced research feature article. Our team of editors, illustrators and Social Media Gurus produce this feature in collaboration with you. There is very little for you to do – on average under 1 hour total time investment from your side. Our team invest an average of 28 to 34 hours in production of each feature. The ethos behind our work is very simple - we take complex topics and translate this body of work into an easily understood feature, which is then accessed globally via Social Media, our hard copy and digital publication, and our website.
Research Features is a free-to-access publication – no reader will be asked to pay or subscribe to read, download or share the content we create. We publish all work under the Creative Commons licence guidelines.
I understand Public Outreach is a very important issue within the research community – it is often difficult to obtain large numbers of views and interaction and of course time consuming. We guarantee that a minimum of 85,000 people will see your article across all digital channels. Please do look at our social media channels, icons are shown on our website, for evidence of the impact of this initiative.
We are currently working on a very special publication to be launched August 2018. This publication will feature a wide variety of disciplines. We would like you to be one of those featured. To achieve this goal we take background information, and previously published papers, and use this information to write an article which is easily understood by the broader audience. You will not have to write anything; our internal team will produce the article. We do ask you to approve everything we produce, so you will remain in control of all content.
I have briefly looked over the details of your work and believe Research Features to be an interesting platform to complement your outreach. You will of course own the article and copyright, leaving your team with a professionally produced feature to be used on your web-page, at events or conferences etc. We also send you hard copies of the final publication and finally, a detailed report which explains who has interacted with your article. Please have a look at our website ... Please also look over our Social Media channels – to see how the global community react to the work we produce: ...
Rather than writing any further detail, could we please find 5 minutes to discuss? During our call I will then answer any questions you have and explain in detail the requirements and cost for taking part. All the services we provide are paid for by the research teams we feature, and the cost for this edition is capped at £400 per page. This covers everything, there are no additional fees or charges. The publication is entirely free to download share and digest, and is not supported by advertising or external funding, as we are an independent scientific media agency. I hope you agree, our work is of a high quality and the results across social media have been outstanding.
We hope to work with you, Thank you in advance
    Kind Regards,
    Bradley Noades

SciDoc is "spreading the knowledge from the desks to the doors of the masses"

From the SciDoc website: "SciDoc Publishers achievements till date includes: ... Special Issues, which is roaring high."

Among the many journal titles listed there is the "JBR Journal of Translational Space dentistry, Medicine and Exploration (JBR-TSME)." The editor-in-chief is "Balwant Rai, Director of Space dentistry, Kepler Space Institute, USA." The Kepler Space Institute's home page explains that the institute "is dedicated to the expansion of human civilization from Earth into space. We believe this is necessary, both to acquire resources – based on the Law of Space Abundance to provide the fundamental needs of preserving peace and prosperity for humankind on this planet – and to extend life through our solar system and beyond." Mr. Rai's name does not appear on this website, but he is editor-in-chief of OMICS' JBR Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine and Dental Science. That speaks volumes.

The International Journal of Forensic Science & Pathology (IJFP), which spammed me, is not listed on the journals page of the website. A word search of the website returns a link that generates a smattering of articles from other journals. If there are editors of and articles in this journal, they are not easily found.

SPG Is Another "Science Publishing Group"

"Science Publishing Group" is a nice name. It is used by SciencePG, which boasts about its 200+ questionable journals, and now (6/13/18) by the more diminutive SPG Journals, with a mere four journals. The domain name spg.ltd was registered by Alibaba Cloud Computing Ltd. d/b/a HiChina, raising a question about the putative Zurich address on the website and in emails.

The content of the email displays an abysmal lack of awareness of "this field." Inasmuch as the journal has no editorial board, that is not surprising. I cannot find any article titles -- let alone any articles -- in these journals.

    Dear Dr. Kaye DH,
I am editing the next several issues of SPG Open and am hoping I can discuss with you the idea of including an article from you. The paper you published entitled "The good - the bad - the ugly: the NAS report on strengthening forensic science in America." was interesting to me and I think another article related to this work would be valuable to our readership. If you could tell me more about your current work that would be very helpful. I think you will find that SPG Open is quite different from most journals in that we stay in communication with our authors during every step of the publication process and provide detailed feedback for each submission whether or not it is accepted for publication.
If you have moved on from this field you could certainly prepare an article on a different topic. We don't have any theme issue in the near future so there is no restriciton [sic] on the scope of topics that may be submitted. The deadline for this is flexible and I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
Please reply when you can and let me know whether or not this is feasible for you in the foreseeable future.
    Sincerely,
    Patrick Stephane M.S.E.

Donnish Journals

Donnish Journals has no address on its website or in its "journals." The person or people behind them cannot be found in the registration data for the domain donnishjournals.com (thanks to GoDaddy.com).

Looking into the Donnish Journal of Law and Conflict Resolution, one finds (5/29/18) highly sporadic "issues" usually consisting of single articles of about ten pages. The journal has no editor-in-chief, and as of May 29, 2018, "[a] detailed list of Editors, Associate Editors and Editorial team will be available shortly." All submissions "are made to undergo sectioning" -- which sounds ominous. "Thereafter they are double-blindedly peer-reviewed ... ." Authors can rest assured that "[m]ore than 100 reviewers are working diligently to shorten the review cycle of the academic research publication; and help researchers to pay more attention on the research itself, not waiting for too long, for suggestions from reviewers." They also are informed that "Manuscript submission and their accessibility is not an infringement of copyright." That's a relief.

Sciendo

Sciendo sounds suspicious. The name itself is a bit contrived; the emailed advertising invitation closes with the absurd warning that it might contain confidential information; and the missive refers to "over 1,100 academic journals, 35 databases, and 100,000 books, with more than 1,300 new book titles added to the platform each year."

But that cornucopia comes from De Gruyter, a German publisher that has been operating for centuries. Sciendo is a repackaging of De Gruyter Open, the publisher's previous open access business, now operating separately under the new name in Poland. It supports self-publishing but also publishes journals and works on conferences for universities.

Although Sciendo is a bona fide publisher, some flakiness mars its web site. For example, the list of law journals includes the Journal of Catalan Intellectual History, Economics and Culture, European Polygraph, and Scientific Bulletin. (The Scientific Bulletin, produced at the Land Forces Academy of Romania, "promotes the results achieved in the projects of national and international research, as well as the contributions of personalities from the academics.")

InTechOpen, Intech, Sciyo

InTechOpen's main web pages site are devoid of the usual solecisms and grammatical errors seen on the websites of many smaller and plainly questionable publishers preying on academics. The About Us page describes the group as "the world's largest Science, Technology and Medicine Open Access book publisher." It claims InTechOpen "has published 2,977 books and 46,833 scientific works total by 100,665 international scientists" (whatever "international" means in this context). That would be about 2 books every 3 days and 11 articles every day, 7 days a years, for the 12 years of InTechOpen's existence.

In 2018, InTechOpen wanted me to pay them 1,400 Euros to write a chapter of between 14 and 20 pages for a book on "Trends and Challenges in Forensic Analysis ? New Frontiers in Forensic Science." I have to wonder about the question mark in the title, but there is not much doubt about likely quality. The subject areas include "nuclear physicists" and "testing." The book description reads:
Forensic Analysis is a field of Forensics to be explored and then executed with a hope to deliver better justice to the mankind. It includes a wide field of forensics unexplored and unearthed, which will be the prime reference for forensic researchers, diagnostic, chemists and physicists for their future practice in their respective fields. The book will visualize and primarily focus on the various aspects of new frontiers in forensic science associated with the production, collection or interrogation of such evidential sample. This will also amalgamate fundamental principles of forensic analysis, protocols and procedures needed for the better forensics. The principles and techniques detailed are then demonstrated and discussed in their applications to real-world investigations and casework conducted over the past several years so that it becomes an evaluation hardcover of all aspects of forensic analysis.
The editor of the book is B. Suresh Kumar Shetty. Dr. Shetty also is an editor for the disreputable OMICS International's Journal of Paediatric Medicine and Surgery.

Earlier invitations (4/24/17, 5/1/17, 5/8/17) sought 1,200 Euros from me for a small chapter in "'Post Mortem Examination and Autopsy - From Death Scene to Laboratory Analysis,' edited by Dr. Kamil Hakan Dogan." Dr. Dogan also edits the Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases and Diagnosis for OMICS International. That InTech finds it necessary to write the following description of "death scene and autopsy" for would-be authors is odd:
Death scene and autopsy may be horrifying for some people. Death scene investigation, post mortem examination, and autopsy are generally performed for the benefit of the living. A death investigation begins with body examination and evidence collection at the scene and proceeds through history, post mortem examination and autopsy, laboratory tests, and determining the cause and manner of death. Although forensic pathology is the oldest branch of the forensic sciences, today many branches of forensic sciences play a role in solving criminal death cases.
InTechOpen was on Beall's list of predatory publishers. The website www.intechopen.com is not registered to its founders. Instead, they use a proxy company in Arizona, obscuring their identities. The first emails came from Teo Kos, from InTechOpen Publishing Process Manager, kos@intechopen.com, +385 (51) 770 447, Janeza Trdine 9, 51000 Rijeka, Croatia.

Other reports indicate that InTechOpen is another name for the venture known as InTech or Sciyo that had a serious reputation problem. See

Biocore

Biocore is on Beall's list of predatory journals, and it not hard to see why. Its web pages explain that:
⊘ "Biocore motto is to give the human era with better future. This can be achieved with our renowned editors, authors and reviewers with their exchanged views and knowledge."
⊘ "Biocore has been involved the knowledge on Science & technology to the access way of every individual."
⊘ "With the Open Access evolution, we are making the genuine and trustworthy contributions to the scientific environment without stopping the access to the readers for reading or even downloading the published papers/articles."
⊘ "[A]ll the eminent personalities can search our database."
⊘ "With the Editorial Board Members of 600, the number is increasing with the volume ... ."
And if you are interested in travel (to Dubai at least), "Biocore is going to conduct Scientific Conferences in near future for grouping all the eminent personalities in one lane." These "Scientific Conferences are conducting mail campaigns for getting the support from scientific societies to spread the open access culture." Translation: We are spamming you.

According to the website for BioCore Conferences (5/16/18), "Biocore group publishes 100+ Open Access Journals with over 10,000 renowned persons." The Biocore Journals homepage states that "Biocore Group hosts 30+ Open Access Scientific Journals." Whatever the exact number may be, they all seem to emanate, impressively, from an apartment at 3409 Grove Gate CT, APT-1712, Richmond-23233, Virginia.

The people behind the domain biocoreopen.org are hidden by a proxy registration. The Virginia address, according to homemetry is occupied by Jennifer M. Lappe, 804-934-0314.

International Journal of Criminal and Forensic Science

Biocore's International Journal of Criminal and Forensic Science: An exhilarating approach

Biocore's International Journal of Criminal and Forensic Science " will emphasize high-level research of clinical relevance and exhilarating approach." It "deals with clinical case reports, mysterious incidents happens in the Forensic and Criminal research group." One not-so-exhilarating incident is the publication of a previously published paper on "Fingerprint Geometric Analysis." (Compare the IJCFS paper with the JFCI paper.)* The paper is mysterious indeed, but it ends with the promise that "Be assured, this method will provide a successful outcome!"

Biocore has been labelled a predatory publisher and conference organizer. This journal has no editor-in-chief named, but it lists an editorial with the following members as of 5/16/18:
Dobbert Duane, Professor, Division of Justice Studies, American College of Forensic Examiners International
Ismail M. Sebetan, Professor of Forensic Sciences, National University
Presley Larry, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, Liberty University
Lee Ross, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, University of Central Florida
Kim Simons, Chair of the Department of Physical Sciences Associate Professor, Emporia State University
Viviana Andreescu, Associate Professor, Department of Criminal Justice, University of Louisville
Julie Campbell, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, Illinois State University
* JFCI is the acronym of the Journal of Forensic and Crime Investigation. The contribution of the flaky Science Inquest Publishers, it promises that "We accepts your manuscripts which are related to Forensic and Crime Investigation."

Umesh Prasad's UK Education Consultancy Services

UK Consultancy Services publishes several journals of broad scope and runs conferences in Switzerland through a "division" named "World Conferences." The journals include
⊘ European Journal of Law and Management (EJLM)
⊘ European Journal of Medicine and Dentistry (EJMD)
⊘ European Journal of Sciences (EJS)
⊘ European Journal of Social Sciences (EJSS)
⊘ Scientific European (SCIEU)
  • The EJLM website states (5/15/18) that its "editorial board comprises of people from varied scholarly areas of law and management who are renowned in their own field and come from diverse geographies and backgrounds." No names are provided, but the editor-in-chief is Umesh Prasad. As befits a journal with no editors, there are no articles listed on the website for this "monthly" journal.
  • Likewise, EJMD's "editorial board comprises of people from varied scientific areas of medicine and dentistry who are renowned in their own field and come from diverse geographies and backgrounds."None are identified. The editor-in-chief is the peripatetic Umesh Prasad. Even though the journal has no content, you can subscribe to it.
  • EJS also "comprises of people from varied academic areas of sciences who are renowned in their own fields and come from diverse geographies and backgrounds" -- not one of whom is identified. A Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Prakash is editor-in-chief. The one issue to date of this "European Journal" has five articles -- all from India. Neither the website nor the issue provides an affiliation for Prof. (Dr.) Prakash, but the Ravi Prakash who is a co-author of an article in it is with India's Amity University in Uttar Pradesh. The issue states that the journal's founder is Umesh Prasad.
  • The European Journal of Social Sciences (EJSS) should not be confused with the more firmly established European Journal of Social Sciences (Revue Europeennes des Sciences Sociales). The latter has managed to generate 58 volumes since its inception 13 years ago. Founder Umesh Prasad's upstart has no named editorial board (but never fear, it "comprises of people from varied academic areas of social sciences who are renowned in their own fields and come from diverse geographies and backgrounds"). It has another Amity University editor-in-chief, Prof (Dr) Nirupama Prakash (Amity International Business School, Amity, University, Noida, India). It has one issue to date with two authors outside of India and Sri Lanka: Maria Anita Stefanelli, Università Roma Tre, and Barbara Wejnert, SUNY (Buffalo).
  • SCIEU is "happy and proud to embark on the eternal journey to bring scientific advances to the living rooms of the people across the world!"The name of the article on the cover of the first issue (I declined to pay for access to the article itself) was "Editing Gene to Prevent Inheritable Disease."
Although press releases about UK Consultancy's journals describe them as open access, the FAQs on their websites indicate otherwise. They state that readers must register and that only "[a]s promotional offer, currently articles and the issues are available free of cost to all subscribers. ... However, this promotional offer can be withdrawn by the management at any time without prior notice."

The founder of these journals "hails from Ghorasahan village (East Champaran, Bihar (India)." A British national, he is the sole registered officer and the only person "of significant control" of UK Consultancy Services. It is hard to know what doctoral degree he holds. The company registration gives his occupation as "Director" and date of birth as May 1965.

All the organizations have the same address: 55 Smithy Lane, Lower Kingswood, Tadworth, England, KT20 6UA. It is the site of a three-bedroom, semi-detached residence. And a busy place it must be. In addition to UK Consultancy Services and its many divisions, the Centre for Advanced Dental Care Limited is there. Its director (who resigned last month) was Neelam Umesh Prasad, a dentist born March 1976. The other shareholder and director is, you guessed it, Umesh Prasad.

In addition, the residence houses UK-India Centre Ltd, yet another company incorporated (on 17 April 2018) and run by one director -- Umesh Prasad. The company's classifications are "publishing of newspapers," "activities of conference organisers," and "publishing of learned journals."

UPDATE (5/16/18): Umesh Prasad kindly provided a comment expressing disappointment in the "tone and presentation" of the information given above. He wrote that he comes "from clinical and academic background"; that he "recently quit the academia and took a plunge in journal sector to make a change"; and that the "business is a start-up, it’s a very new and things are still in flux taking shape – for example, boards are being reconstituted, websites being updated etc." Potential contributors to his journals are advised to read Mr. (or perhaps it it is Dr.) Prasad's full comment and to keep an eye out for improvements.

Vandeplas Publishing

I am not suggesting that Vanderplas Publishing is a scammer or a predatory publisher. Its publications include books by perfectly reputable authors. But there are a number of question marks:
  • It periodically solicits me in separate mailings to multiple email addresses.
  • A book has this review from Judge Alex Kozinzki (ret.): "If you’re holding this book in your hands – as you no doubt must be – just start turning pages and get ready for a treat.” That sounds good, but, hey, it it is an eBook. Still, at $9.95, the price is right.
  • The office address is one of those provided by Regus, a company that supplies "virtual offices" and "will receive and sign for mail and packages." It advertises a "professional company image without the cost of a physical office." However, it also leases spared space and rooms.
  • Buzzfile, a company database, estimates only "$114,590 in annual revenues" and "approximately 2 people at this [Lake Mary, Florida] location." I do not know how accurate these estimates are.
