Scimaze Joins the Rat Race

Scimaze Palliative and Nursing Care has invited me to submit articles and to apply to be an editorial board member. Although I have no background or qualifications in the field, I suppose my contributions would be valuable relative to what else is there. The journal's website is largely an empty shell. It has tabs for articles in press, a current issue, an archive, and an editor-in-chief, but there are no entries. The editorial board consists of assistant professors in Tokyo and Iran. That is better than most of the other Scimaze journals, which have no editors and no content at all.

Nevertheless, for $519, they will be happy to "process" articles. One hopes that the processing results in better composed work than what the publisher has on its About Us page. There, we learn that
★ Scimaze Group ... works towards taking research innovatively to a certain limelight
★ Our international journals has made place among the top scientific journals [← That is quite an accomplishment considering that the 16 journals have published only five articles.]
★ Our journal is protuberant for the seriousness of the research work
★ We work for a cause to take the research work to a level never seen before.
★ We work with the intention of providing a better future for the mankind.
One Scimaze journal does have an editor-in-chief. He is "Nelson Howard Hendler, Assistant professor, Department of Neurosurgery, School of Medicine Johns Hopkins University." At this point, Dr. Hendler is the only one who has written anything for the journal he edits, Scimaze Anaethesia and Pain Managment. The photograph is that of a young man, but the biographical description states that Dr. Hendler graduated from Princeton University in 1966 and taught at Johns Hopkins for 31 years -- apparently from 1975-2006.. In 2006, Dr. Hendler had his medical license suspended because of allegations that he "traded drugs for sex with patients and handed out pain pills without proper prescriptions." Fred Schulte, Md. Board Suspends Doctor's License, Baltimore Sun, Feb. 9, 2006. The details are rather lurid. Dr. Hendler edits a journal for another shell publisher, Crimson Publications.

Biomedical Conferences Claims the Journals of Other (?) Publishers

One would imagine that Biomedical Conferences is just a conference organizer. But its website features "our journals" as "a singular repository" for "acclaimed scientific authors" seeking to reach "like-minded peers." There are more journals than I care to count on the list of "our journals." Some have ISSNs; some don't. Almost all (based on a sample of clicks) are published by three ostensibly separate publishers -- Crimson, Iris, and Lupine Publishers. Examples from the Biomedical Conferences list include

Modern Concepts in Material Science same
The only journal in my quick sample that does not belong to another publisher, the Biomedical Journal of Scientific and Technical Research has the following underpunctuated "aim and scope" for "rendering a global podium" of "scientific knowledge on science":
The only motto of Biomedical Journal of Scientific & Technical Research (BJSTR) Publishers is accelerating the scientific and technical research papers, considering the importance of technology and the human health in the advanced levels and several emergency medical and clinical issues associated with it, the key attention is given towards biomedical research. Thus, asserting the requirement of a common evoked and enriched information sharing platform for the craving readers. BJSTR is such a unique platform to accumulate and publicize scientific knowledge on science and related discipline. This multidisciplinary open access publisher is rendering a global podium ...
Is it a coincidence that the webpages of both this flaky journal and the Biomedical Conferences webpages are copyrighted by Lupine Publishers LLC and that the spam for Biomedical Conferences came from Lupine Publishers? The Aurora, Colorado, "editorial offices" of Lupine Press are a four-bedroom house at the registered address of both Crimson and Lupine Publishers. Postings on Crimson, Iris, and Lupine Publishers have more information about them and one man, Sudheer Kaku, who may be behind them.

Iris Publishers, "your one-stop-place for latest scientific!"

The About Us webpage of Iris Publishers (7/12/18) has such ringing phrases as "your one-stop-place for latest scientific!" "aiding the growth of learners ... for the prosperity of science." They want "to exploit the scientific information"and "to unfold the quality research globally." To exploit and unfold, IRIS uses a "potential Editorial team" and a "highly qualified and expert Editorial committee [that] is indulged in scrutinizing articles with stringent peer review process ensuring that it follows our policies." Who could ask for anything more?

Iris has pictures of 35 journals on its website -- 36 if you count the World Journal of Yoga and Natural Therapy twice inasmuch as it "is an ambidextrous journal."

The domain name irispublishers.org is registered to New Dream Network, LLC dba DreamHost Web Hosting. The telephone number on the contact page, 914-407-6109, also is used by Lupine Publishers, which is "focused on ... Remedial missions in relation with Technical Knowledge." Virtual office supplier, Regus, could be the source of the address of the office building in San Francisco. Clearly, there is reason to wonder where Iris is actually located. The spam inviting me "to join your hands with us in this instigate" suggests that the handshake would be quite a stretch.

UPDATE: Two comments of July 13, 2018, provide more information. One from "Smut Clyde" reveals that the common telephone number for Lupine and Iris (not to mention the flowery association) is no accident. He (or she) found that

Iris Publishers LLC is a Colorado Domestic Limited-Liability Company filed on May 18, 2018 .... The company's principal address is 7865 S Grand Baker St., Aurora, CO 80016. That Aurora street address is also the home of Lupine Publisher, Crimson Publisher, "Biomedical Research Ltd", and Sudheer Kaku (the scammer who registered the corresponding domains).

The address on the spam from the Global Journal of Forensic Science & Medicine is that of an office building with space rented by Regus. This company provides a "Virtual Office, The right image for your business, with a prestigious address and a range of supporting services."

UPDATE (5/17/19): Understandably, Mr. Kaku objects to being referred to as a "scammer." He commented (below) that "I own Biomedical Research Network + & Crimson Publishers and yes, the Colorado Address is an editorial office for the domains we did specify that on websites. We use Virtual offices for mail handling." He insisted that "we formed this corporation to publish quality research" and added "Please let me know if you come across any genuine complain or an instance where we scammed or didn't deliver on what we promised." At least two papers in the Annals of Biostatistics and Biometric Applications could not have received the peer review and editing that the journals promise to their authors and the public. So too, a reason to question whether the Peer Reviewed Journal of Forensic and Genetic Sciences is peer reviewed in practice as well as in name is at the posting on Lupine Publishers.

UPDATE (9/14/19): If further proof of the flakiness of Iris Publishers and related spammers is needed, it comes from an email referred to me by a professor in the United Kingdom who wrote that "[a]s these things go it really takes the biscuit! The standout bit is in bold below. [T]his seems to me to be a new low." The email from Iris reads as follows:

From: iris@publisher-france.com
Subject: top rated journals of Scopus and WoS
Date: 11 September 2019 14:30:00 BST
Good day,
Great opportunity to publish your article.
in the top rated journals of Scopus, until the end of 2019,
book a publication at the beginning of 2020.
Now, we have a program called “Co-authorship”. You can become a co-author of an already finished article, which is accepted for publication.
in a journal indexed in Scopus.
We translate the article to English and design the article ourselves.
We guarantee that your article will be published in the journal of Scopus and indexed.

We also have a large number of journals of all directions. We will help you publish your article quickly and monitor indexing to Scopus.
Send articles, ask questions.
We will be happy to answer you.

Perhaps Mr. Kaku can explain how he plans to make people into "co-authors" of "already finished" articles by having Iris translate it into English. Is the assumption that the "co-author" already is an author of the original article, or is "a program called 'Co-authorship'" a solicitation for plagiarism?

UPDATE (4/26/20): The peer review at Iris's Scientific Journal of Research and Reviews is also bogus. See Iris Publishers and the World's First Quantification of the Deal with Birds.

Crimson Publishers and Purple Prose: "what you read here could change life, as we know it"

You've got to love 'em. They are active

♥ keep[ing] the knowledge flowing
♥ ensuring the quality by reputed editors
♥ striv[ing] towards betterment of societal conditions benefitting global humanity
♥ nurturing the essential temper
♥ chang[ing] life, as we know it..

They do all this from the peculiar address of "Third Avenue, 2nd floor, New York - 10016, USA." (The website may be referring to 600 Third Ave, which houses "virtual offices and addresses."). Their domain, crimsonpublishers.com, is registered to Perfect Privacy, LLC," a Florida company.

The journal that spammed me -- based on my "innovative profile which would apt to our Journal proficiency" -- is named Forensic Science & Addiction Research. It "aims to showcase advanced research in the field of forensic science, addiction research and other related areas."Apparently,  "related" is construed liberally. The "latest articles" have such titles as "Effect of Strength Training on Physical Variable of College Men Cricket Players," "Lack of Job Satisfaction Among Nurses," and (my favorite) "Pedagogy Integrated with Information Technology to Promote Its Effectiveness Should be Keen on Humanities." The US members of the editorial board are said to be

Richard H Martin, Mercer University
David P Keys, New Mexico State University
Robert L Clegg, California Health Sciences University
Ronn Johnson, Creighton University
Alireza Heidari, California Southern University

UPDATES

6/19/18: The logo on the Crimson website is "Wings to the Research," but this does not mean that they are about to fly away. Today's spam came from a biomedical journal with no apparent connection to Crimson. The email used a different domain, as did the journal's website. Neither identified Crimson as the publisher. However, the telephone number leads to two publishers (or is it one?) at the same fake address -- Crimson and Lupine Publishing. Of the two websites, only Crimson's lists the journal.

2/10/19: Some insights into these related endeavors come from the company information database Buzzfile, which reports that Crimson, Lupine, and Biomedical Research Network share the address of 7865 S Grand Baker St, Aurora, CO 80016. The building at the address could be the home of Sudheer Kaku. The file on Crimson Publishers includes these questions and answers:

Q. How big is Crimson Publishers?
A. ... estimated to generate $39,834 in annual revenues, employs approximately 1 people [sic] at this location
Q. How long has Crimson Publishers been in business?
A. ... approximately 2 years.
Q. Is there a key contact at Crimson Publishers?
