The "Call for Paid Reviewers" from "Phoenix Journals" lists nearly 50 nonexistent "Phoenix (Scholarly) Journals Of" this and that. I say "nonexistent" because a search "Phoenix Journals Of" and "Phoenix (Scholarly Journal Of" uncovered no such publications. The sender's address domain (phoenix.com) belongs to a company that makes BIOS firmware. Querying ICAAN whois for the registrant of the domain "academicpublishing.online" (given in the email for replies) yields no name for the registrant and an address of "delta NG." NG might stand for Nigeria. I wonder if this is another scam to harvest information on bank accounts.

UPDATE (4/20/19): Anonymous wrote that "Phoenix Journals exist" at the domain phoenixjournals.org. This domain name was registered to GoDaddy.com in February, 2019. The Contact Us page on the website suggests emailing the "support team: contact@academicpublishing.online." GoDaddy reports that the domain name academicpublishing.online "expired on 4/2/2019 and is pending renewal or deletion."

A website at the new domain phoenixjournals.org does exist, at least as a shell. It lists the journals enumerated in the continuing spam. But the journals appear to be no more real today than when I searched for them four months ago. Today, I looked for the contents of the first five journals.There are none. The "archives" are blank, and there are no editors listed. The About Us page contains three paragraphs that also appear, word for word with the same grammatical and spelling errors, on the About Us page for Discourse Journals (from Nigeria, according to its website).

American Journal of Engineering Research (AJER)

I have not been able to determine the publisher of the American Journal of Engineering Research (AJER). A reputable journal would have the publisher's name and address on its website. This journal's email to me came from an account on a South Korean web portal and had no signature line or other identification of the individual who wrote it. The domain name AJER.org is registered to Chetan Sharma, Publishing, Shri Ram Colony, Devi Mandir road, Dasna, Ghaziabad (201015), Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh 201015, India, +91.9313171903, chetan.journals@gmail.com. The name or email address is associated with various other flaky journals or publishers.The address on AJER's website belongs to National State Research, a private company in Connecticut. Its Vice President of R & D, Moinuddin Sarker, is the managing editor of the journal. Dr. Sarker has four publications in OMICS journals.

Other red flags are evident. First, aside from Moinuddin Sarker, the editorial board of this "American Journal of Engineering" is devoid of editors from the United States. (Good journals need not have US editors, but one has to wonder about the honesty of an "American journal" that has such tenuous connections with America.)

Second, it is not clear how many of the editors are engineers. One is a postdoc (polymer science) at Shah abdul Latif University in Pakistan. Others specialize in such subjects as animal breeding, genitourinary tumors, health and epidemiology, hypoxia, and "Logic, Philosophy of Maths and African Science."

Third, the journal touts its inclusion in the American National Engineering Database (and in no other indexing service). ANED has been described as a "fake database by fake publisher" in India.

Fourth, the journal promises peer review within a week. Competent peer review within a week is not routinely possible.

Finally, AJER insists that it is an "official international journal," whatever that means.

Invention Journals are "Open Aaccess"

Five journals, all ending with the word "Invention" in their name, are listed on the website inventionjournals.org (10/10/2018). They are "Open Aaccess To All Researchers" with "Online As Well As Print Version Both" and "Doulble Blind Peer Review." (Evidently, line editing remains a challenge to the editors.)

These journals have posted a copyright assignment form that is incoherent. It states that the author "understand[s] that the Editor-in-Chief IJESI may transfer the Copyright to a publisher at his discretion" yet asserts that "[t]he author(s) reserve(s) all proprietary rights ... ."

The spam and the web sites provide no address or telephone numbers, but India is the probable location. The registrant information on the domain ijesi.org is limited to the location of Uttar Pradesh. The registrar is Net 4 India, Ltd. One spam email I received came from the domain seolatestechnology.com, which is registered to an unnamed individual in Delhi.

The "Editorials Board Members" of the International Journal of Engineering and Science Invention, which spammed me, include "Dr. Salawu .O.W", an "Inorganic Chemist, Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi , Benue State Nigeria" with three years of unspecified "Experience."

Gece Academy: Pay to Publish Your Dissertation or Thesis

It is easy to have a dissertation published. In addition to outfits that help with the construction of any e-book from any paying author who wants to self-publish, there is ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, which boasts "[t]he largest collection of electronic theses and dissertations available worldwide ... 4 million works from more than 3,000 universities, [with] more than 130,000 works [added] annually" (10/5/18). Another option for avoiding the screening process or criteria of traditional, relatively selective academic publishing houses is to turn to publishers who are less picky or who use different criteria. Obviously, these publications will carry little brand-name prestige, and expecting high quality line and copy editing could well be unrealistic.But you have to pay for them anyway with Gece Academy.

Gece's email suffers from the absence of such editing, and its Park Avenue address apparently comes from Regus, a virtual office supplier used by many of the publishers whose emails appear in this blog. Gece Publishing House also publishes papers from conferences -- with payment up front from the authors.

The American Publishing House (which uses the acronym TAPH) is "always open to any correspondence from your side." Indeed, it is "open to any kind of feedbacks ... ."

GoDaddy's Domains By Proxy registered the name theamph.com for the principals behind TAPH. The address on the contact page is "27, George Street, Bloomfield NJ 07003-4329." Homemetry.com reports this as the location of a single family dwelling (4 beds, 2.5 baths, 1,926 sqft) owned by Vasant S Kalathia and last sold: Feb 2013 for $327,100. The business currently registered at this location is Shanti Kalathia, Certified Public Accountant. The address also is used by Shreeji Impex, Inc. Current or past residents are Shanti Kalathi, 973-338-0687; Shantilal Kalathia (same); Priya Kalathia (973-338-8811); Shanti V Kalathia (same); Uday A Kalathia (same); Vasant S Kalathia (same).

For at least a year, TAPH has been spamming for an "inaugural issue" of Materials Research International. The website still is devoid of papers. However, it is full of alleged editors. Oddly, within a week the names were almost all different. The list of topics for the journal also had changed. At least one link in the email was terminated because "The TinyURL (y4dsmxfj) you visited was used by its creator in violation of our terms of use. ... Such violations of our terms of use include:
