OMICS Journal of Forensic Research

OMICS has long been criticized for aggressively and deceptively promoting conferences and journals of dubious quality. In 2012, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported that although OMICS began publishing in 2008, "only about 60 percent of [its 200] journals have actually published anything." As of 2012, NIH informed OMICS that PubMed Central would not accept any OMICS Publishing Group journals because the "[National Library of Medicine's] selection group has raised serious concerns about the publishing practices of your organization." A letter demanded "that you cease and desist from employing our name or the name of any of our agencies institutes or employees on your website for other than true factual statements."

The website of its Journal of Forensic Medicine includes such morsels as "Forensic Medicine is a multidisciplinary subject ... used to for the scientific assessment of DNA, blood samples, and so on. Forensic plays an important role in criminal investigations and it is equally used in archeology, Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Geology and Victimology." Lo and behold, the description of the Journal of Forensic Research is generated from the same mold:  "Forensic science is a multidisciplinary subject ... used to for the scientific assessment of DNA, blood samples, bones and so on. Forensic plays an important role in criminal investigations and it is equally used in archeology, Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Geology and Victimology." All OMICS journals advertise a "21 day rapid review process."

Who edits such journals, and what researchers will fork over $3,019 (or $1,719 as of 4/30/17) to avail themselves of its "platform for the authors to make their contribution towards the journal and the editorial office promises a peer review process for the submitted manuscripts for the quality of scholarly publishing"? The three editors-in-chief of the Journal of Forensic Research are said to be

Jian Tie, Nihon University School of Medicine, Oyaguchi, Japan
Jianye Ge, Institute of Applied Genetics, University of North Texas Health Science Center, and
Sheila M Willis, Director, Forensic Science Laboratory, Ireland

The names given for editors include

Rick Wyant, CRT Less Lethal Inc, and
Peter Gill, Professor of Forensic Genetics, Norwegian Institute of Public Health, University of Oslo.

A "special issue" on "Criminology Forensic," edited by Thomas Holt and Jianye Ge, consisted of a grand total of four articles such as Modern Trend of Country Made /Improvised Pistols Used in the Capital of India. Other letters or articles in various issues are

The Usage of Polygraph Method in Bulgaria, by Todor Todorov (noting that "Participating in a 10 week course with APA standards in Sofia is a lot cheaper and easier than to apply for a USA visa, paying expenses for accommodation and travel costs");
Reality Bites Demystifying Crime, by Gurveen Gill (noting that "Some scientist recommends that thorough analysis of the size, position and other features of bite marks be completed before any comparison with a suspect’s dentition is made."); and
When Good DNA Goes Bad, by Mark Perlin (maintaining that "TrueAllele computer mixture interpretation is thorough, objective, sensitive, specific, and reproducible; human review methods are not.").

UPDATE (26 Sept 2018)

The Journal of Forensic Research has a fourth editor-in-chief listed -- "Dr. Mohammed Nasimul Islam, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia." But the list cannot be trusted. Jianye Ge told me that he never authorized the use of his name and that repeated demands for its removal have been ignored.

UPDATE (26 Jan 2021)

Another online publisher and conference organizer -- Hilaris SRL -- is now identified as the publisher of this journal. Jianye Ge's name remains as an editor-in-chief. Sheila Willis has been promoted to editor-in-chief, and Dr. Islam no longer holds this title.

Scientists and administrators from the U.S. Department of Justice have found the Journal of Forensic Research a convenient outlet for their work. See Gregory J. Dutton, Gerald M. LaPorte, Iris R. Wagstaff, and H.R. Spivak, Cultivating the Next Generation of Forensic Scientists Through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), J. Forensic Res. 2017, 8:4. Whether the publication fee was paid with taxpayer dollars I cannot say.

Avid Science

Avid Science apparently is located in Hyderabad, although its email and website (3/15/17) list an "international mailing address" in Berlin.* Its journals have the same graphic for the title page, and almost all journal titles are "Prime Research in ... ." No journal has a designated editor-in-chief. Editorial board members receive 50% off Avid's usual fee for publishing online.

One would hope that leaders in the field comprise an editorial board. I started (and stopped) with two members of the editorial board of Prime Research in Oncology (Payal Mittal, UConn Health School of Medicine, and Oorvashi Roy, University of Texas). Both are postdocs.

From ScholarTown to Sciedu Press to the Canadian Center of Science and Technology

ScholarTown's email of 1/19/17 (below) promised to let me "Review Articles and Get PAID." Why me? Because "Having read your article, 'Book Review, The Right and the Power: The Prosecution of Watergate', we believe that you have considerable experience as an author or peer reviewer of scholarly articles." That this 40-year-old book review was published in a journal that does not use peer review suggests that ScholarTown is none too perceptive. Interestingly, its address in Toronto is identical to that for the Canada office of Sciedu Press, which describes itself as "a private scientific publishing house" with the "objective of excellence in science, education, and culture."

I checked out ScholarTown's short list of journal articles begging for reviewers. Apparently, would-be reviewers bid to review these manuscripts. The one I clicked on was for the International Journal of Psychological Studies (IJES), an offering of the Canadian Center of Science and Technology. CCSE has been accused of predatory publishing. IJES is offering $20 for a reviewer. The bids to do the work are coming in at $25.

CCSE referred to the same 40-year-old book review when it contacted me to contribute to one its journals. One of CCSE's addresses is, you guessed it, the same as ScholarTown's and Sciedu Press.
Email
1/19/17: Dear David H. Kaye, Having read your article, "Book Review, The Right and the Power: The Prosecution of Watergate", we believe that you have considerable experience as an author or peer reviewer of scholarly articles. The purpose of this email is to invite you to participate in a new model for conducting scholarly peer reviews that enables you to earn from reviewing articles. ... Using ScholarTown’s online platform, publishers/editors can post article review projects that registered scholars can bid for. Employers (publishers/editors) can then select appropriate scholars for conducting article reviews, and pay them for work that is completed to their satisfaction. In contrast to the traditional voluntary approach to peer reviewing, this model enables scholars to receive reasonable compensation and stimulating work to review. To review articles and get PAID, please register ... Sign up now!

Center for Academic Research (CAR)

The spam from the Center for Academic Research (CAR) resembles that from RIPK. Indeed, CAR promises even more impressive review and publication times, asking for manuscripts five days before publication. Its categorization of subject areas is interesting. "Business" is part of "business," Law is part of "accounting and marketing." And so on.

Judging from the images on Google Maps, the building at the Portsmouth address is a residential townhouse.

Centre of Excellence for Scientific & Research Journalism (COES&RJ)

A conference organizer (Turkey, Malaysia, UAE, and China, many cancelled) and publisher of oddly organized journals, CIES&RJ pretends to have a US address (that belongs to a warehouse and is used by international scammers). The email I received (2/1/17) was for the "Journal of Social Sciences." The website refers to a "Journal of Law," but that link goes to the other journal. The only editorial board listed (2/1/17) is for the "Journal of Business and Management," whose editor-in-chief is Dr. Ra'ed (Mo'hd Taisir) Masa'deh, Dean: Faculty of Management, University of Jordan, Aqaba, Jordan.

The domain coesnrj.com was registered by GoDaddy.com for Nasir Shamsi, 10685-B Hazelhurst Dr. # 16258, Houston, Texas 77043 (the warehouse address), +1-281-407-7509, shamsipnp@hotmail.com. According to the About Us page of the center's website, the center is a Texas corporation with legal name COES&RJ, LLC (same telephone number) for which "the governing persons are: Mrs. Farhat Tabbasum [and] Mr. Nasir Ali Shamsi."

An email of 4/29/17 entitled "Call for Paper" for the COES Journal of Social Sciences came from editor.jss@centreofexcellence.net (no name). This journal now has an editorial board. The editor-in-chief is Nasir Ali Shamsi. Dr. Neda Khan (with no stated affiliation) is the editor. US members are Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy, Eastern New Mexico University, and Dr. Neuvic Kalmar Malembanie, PhD., Howard University. Dr. Shaughnessy is a Professor of Special Education in the ENMU Educational Studies department. Dr. Malembanie's biography, written while he was working toward a Ph.D. in literature, is at https://papers.ssrn.com/abstract_id=2152666.
